Clicker Training for Traditional Trainers

For the last 10 years or so, anyone who trains with traditional methods has been considered an ignorant neanderthal. Most of  the people who hold that position are plainly zealots of all positive training methods. I don't happen to be one of those people. So if you've become skeptical of clicker training because of those whackos, you might  want to reconsider.

The main reason for a traditional trainer to investigate clicker training is not to have some kind of religious experience. The main reason is that there are some things you can do with clicker  training that simply don't happen with traditional methods. Off-leash control is invariably a stumbling block when a choke-chain is your primary means of building behavior. Don't read that wrong. I didn't say it was impossible or that it isn't a regular result of traditional training. I've seen enough perfectly happy, hard-working traditionally trained dogs to know better. What I am suggesting is that there are some dogs and some desirable behaviors that I see regularly with clicker training, but rarely if ever with traditional methods.

Here are the things that I think will benefit you as a trainer if you can add some new skills to your current proficiency...

  • Earlier serious training
  • Get "soft" dogs to realize their potential
  • Greater precision with distance behaviors
